One Life - Part 3
Lena got along well with one of guys in the group she was hanging out with. They soon became lovers and were spending alot private moments together. Not long after, Lena realised that she was pregnant. Both of them panicked as they were still teenagers after all. Lena decided to tell her mother about it. Though she was furious, her mother didn't reprimand her. She too was at a loss as what should be done as it concerned her first grandchild. Marriage was out of the question as the youngsters were definitely not ready for that kind of commitment and keeping the baby was not an option either. Then one of Lena's relatives who got news of her unexpected pregnancy, approached her with a proposal.
It seemed that the lady relative who had been married for a number of years, was still childless. She was willing to adopt her baby and to treat it like her own. Lena's mother hesitated initially but when the relative promised to compensate them for their efforts, she persuaded Lena to keep the baby for her sake. Then for the next few months, Lena was being treated like a queen as all she needed to do was to eat all she could and to have plently of rest. The 'future' parents would deliver specially prepared meals and tonic soup to ensure that she would give them a strong and healthy child. They even paid for all the medical checkups and examinations. In fact, any request that was for the good of the unborn child would be met. Lena who didn't expect such privileged treatment, was so overwhelmed by it that she was actually enjoying her pregnancy.
Then fnally came the day when the baby was due. Lena gave birth to a boy. The new parents were so delighted that they 'rewarded' Lena with a $2000 hongbao. However, their felicity was short-lived. It seemed that all the nourishment and tonic didn't help the developing infant as he turned out to be quite sickly, having to be in and out of hospital frequently. Feeling unwell most of the time, the baby would be crying day in and day out and even through the night. It was not only physically and emotionally draining but also financially. And that was only the beginning. As the baby grew older, it appeared to his parents that he was no ordinary child. He was an 'extraordinary' child. He was a retard. It was then discovered that his 'natural' mother's addiction to drugs had caused some damage to his brain while it was being developed in her womb. His parents were devastated that Lena had kept mum about her addiction. They wanted to sue her but realised that there wasn't much they could do as they were the willing party. Moveover the baby was already legally theirs and could not be 'refunded'. They could only blame themselves for being so careless in their desperate desire for a child.
When the unfortunate news of her son's conditions reached her, Lena didn't feel sorry for the child nor did she feel guilty for having ruined his life. On the contrary, she felt fortunate that he wasn't hers anymore. In fact, she treated him as he was never a part of her as she didn't even get to hold him after he was born, that being a condition agreed upon so as to minimise the attachment between mother and child. Nevertheless, one good thing that came out of the incident was that when her mother learnt of her drug addiction, she sent her to the rehab centre to help kick her addiction.
